Mittumaari

Midsummer, Midsommar~ Mittumaari, Ukon Juhla, Juhannus.
Kind of a big deal here at Nordic countries.

~
Some of us celebrate it for the sake of Ukko, the old mighty pagan god at 24.6.
Christians celebrate the birth of John the Baptist (Eve is always on friday while Juhannus day is on saturday).
Wiccan´s and some other neo-pagans have their ancient
Druid feast Litha ( Alban Heruin), on summer solstice 21th of June.

Anyways, main thing in Finland ís to pack a huge amount of food supplies with you, and run to those mighty forest lands and the shores of our thousand lakes ( or baltic sea) and get drunk ( Old habit for the honor of Ukko) at their summer cabins or summer festivals like Nummirock.

Night is nightless all over Finland.
Even here at southeast, all though sun will set here unlike north from the arctic circle.
People still remember old times when all stores were closed several days, so going to a grocery store can be a living nightmare on the previous week.
Like your´e never going to see food again.

Well, some of us don´t.
Every year there is an official countdown for the death´s caused by midsummer celebration.
So far the count in Finland is 13.
3 of them children.

Whilst we spent our midsummer at  very easy going way.
We slept away sleep debts.
Maintained some midsummer rituals by barbequing,
and went to one of the oldest zoo´s in the world  ( since 1889)
with Knut while my daughter spent her midsummer by going to a Tallinn cruise.

We thought that maybe saturday 25.6. would be a quiet day to visit Helsinki Zoo, Korkeasaari.
Autistic people do not usually enjoy crowds.
All the news said that our capital is empty when people have forsakened it by going to the countryside.

Well I guess Mustikkamaa and Korkeasaari mean countryside for the city folk cause the place was packed.

Thus Knut enjoyed a lot of seeing the big cats and an european bison, but otherwise it was just too much for him to bear.

I always feel a little sad while going to Zoo´s.
Especially I feel bad for those ravens, owls and eagles who can see the open sky but never get the chance to fly free.
Nevertheless, many spieces would not exist anymore if there where no Zoo´s.
Like Père David's deer.

Also an interesting fact about that island is the approximately 3500 year old heathen sacrificial stone
that was found there 2013.
Zoo is planning an area based to that stone and traditional finnish forest scape.

Maybe I´ll see the stone later in the autumn when I´ll go there again with my daughter to the Night of the Cat´s event.

Sleeping bears.

Bear is highly honoured creature in finnish mythology, being the king of the forest.
So, finnish language has obviously several synonyms for bear too;

Karhu,Tapio, Otso, Kouvo, Mesikämmen, Ohto, Kontio, Kontia, Metsänpitäjä, Metsänhaltija, Metsä(h)inen, Metsänkuningas, Metsänvilja, Metsänvaari, Metsänvanhus, Kouko, Mönninkäinen, Pöykäri, Nalle...
